Quick Help

To Navigate within this discussion area and go to higher-level pages, use the linked titles that are just above the page title and also at the end of the page. These begin with the open folder icon Open Folder icon and separated by Path division icon. On this page, for example, look up above the Quick Help title to see this:

A Discussion Discussion icon is a collection of messages on the same topic, and has this icon. You can post messages in a discussion, or click "Add Discussion" to begin a new discussion if you don't find an existing one that fits what you want to talk about, and the conference manager has the site set up to allow that.

A Folder, Folder icon like the folders on your hard drive, is something which holds other folders and discussions within it. Click "Add Folder" to create a new folder if the site is set up to allow that.

To post a new message, either scroll down to the bottom of the page in a discussion or click the "Post Message" button in the toolbar to go there. Type your message into the text box. If you want to add special formatting such as bold, italics, bullets, etc. you can use either the QuickEdit commands or regular HTML as you're typing it in. Help pages are linked just above the post box. When you're ready, click "Post My Message" just below the text box where you've been typing. The page will reload and your message will appear with the others.

To edit or delete a message click the "Edit" or "Delete" buttons next to your post. You can edit for only 30 minutes, to allow you to fix typos or reword something, but you can't edit after that. Use the "Edit" button to correct errors rather than using the "Back" button in your browser. If you use the "Back" button your comment will be posted twice instead of edited. It's possible to delete a post at any time if you're a registered user.

Guest or Registered User? Unless you specifically register and log in, you are here as a guest user. You'll need to register a userID to post in this discussion area, and if you register, you will be able to set preferences for how you view messages, go directly to new messages to save time, and better customize the discussion area to your personal taste.

To Register a user name, click on the "Register" button in the toolbar toward the bottom of each page.

To Log In with your user name from a previous session, click the "Login" button in the toolbar toward the bottom of each page.

Subscriptions are a way to find new messages quickly. You can track just the discussions and folders you're intereted in following. To subscribe to a folder or discussion, click the "Subscribe" button in the toolbar toward the bottom of the discussion or folder you wish to subscribe to. You can

  • check for new material by visiting the website and clicking the "Check Messages" button

If you've chosen "Check Messages," just click the "Check Messages" button when you return. You'll be taken immediately to just the new material since you were here last. If there are a large number of posts in the discussions you've subscribed to and you don't wish to read them all, you can "mark them as read" in the Preferences area. Subscriptions are available only to registered users. To unsubscribe from web checking, use the "Change Subscriptions" button.

To Set Preferences such as font size, personal profile, favorite URLs, email settings, or change your password, use the "Preferences" button in the toolbar toward the bottom of each page. Preference-setting is only available to registered users.

The "Mark" button next to each message allows you to bookmark a post so you can find it easily later. It will be listed in your Message Center page. The Message Center button sends you to page listing all of your bookmarks and, if you have subscribed to any discussions or folders, a list of the new posts. The "Message Center" and "Mark" buttons appears only for registered users who are logged in.

Visited Links here won't turn a different color like you're used to seeing. Making your browser think you haven't been there yet makes sure you get all the new messages with a fresh page each time you visit.
